Boeing’s Track Record of Blazing Engines

On February 20th, a Boeing plane that took flight over a suburb in Denver lost its engine in an explosion. This marks another in the line of engine failures suffered by Boeing’s planes recently, and brings a light to this dangerous, and very specific flaw that can endanger the entire plane. The problem that caused the engine failures in every case is known as a “fan blade-out”, in which the blade shoots out from its proper position. What makes this problem particularly dangerous for Boeing airliners though, is that the blades avoided the coating around them that was constructed to absorb the blade-out, and would instead hit the engine’s inlet, causing a complete destruction of the engine’s covering, and potentially the entire engine due to lack of protection. This may prove to be very dangerous to flights across the US and the world for some time. Although Boeing is attempting to create more effective blade coverings, they have yet to see major success.
