Winter the Dolphin Dies at 16
Winter died after days of sickness from a gastrointestinal infection. Winter was first brought to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in 2014 after being caught in a crab trap causing her to lose her tail. CMA helped her learn how to swim with the use of a prosthetic tail. She was the inspiration and was in the 2011 movie “Dolphin Tale” as well as the sequel “Dolphin Tale 2”. Through these movies Winter inspired hope through the county. CMA hopes her spirit will continue on through those she inspired. According to Dr. Shelly Marquardt, CMA had been working with teams around the country to help treat Winter and was comforted knowing they “did everything possible to give her the best chance at survival.” CMA will have a memorial service on November 20th to honor Winter.
