CD 5 and the Troubles of Gerrymandering

The US government has always had controversy surrounding how maps are drawn. The maps decide who is elected, so any controlling party sees great benefit in manipulating it for themselves. However, due to a combination of laws and constitutional amendments, such map control is illegal in certain cases, like when it is based on race alone. That is the argument Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made when he demanded the removal of Congressional District 5 in Florida. It is unusual for a governor to make a demand like this, but DeSantis has much to fain from CD 5’s removal from the map, seeking to strengthen his party before the midterms start. Of course, this map messiness has consequences across all of Florida. Ultimatums have a tendency to delay necessitated legislation, and Florida voters might find themselves in a new district without realizing it. Right now, all voters can do is watch and pay their eyes and ears to the news, so that they might know which representatives they are even considering.
