Classical Seasonal Movies

Now that the fall and winter season is upon us, it’s time to pull out the classic seasonal movies, grab some popcorn and snuggle up with your favorite blanket and some hot chocolate.

  1. Dead Poets Society

“O’ captain my Captain!”

Vermont, New England, 1959. The students at Welton Academy have been trained for generations to lead lives of conformity and tradition–until charismatic new professor John Keating sets foot in the institution, motivating them to think for themselves, live life to the fullest, and “Carpe Diem”. As a result of his unconventional approach, inspirational Keating awakens the students’ spirits, encourages them to be exceptional individuals, and challenges them to achieve their full potential. However, when tragedy strikes the school, drawing the wrath of a disapproving faculty, Keating and his boys will find themselves at loggerheads with the school’s officials, the parents, and the system.

2. Good Will Hunting

“People call these things imperfections, but they’re not.”

A young adult by the name of Will Hunting has always been living in the slums. He spends his nights at bars and batting cages with his best friends. However, he has an amazing talent in Mathematics. When Will is almost sent to jail, a professor at MIT decides to bail him out under the condition that he works with him for math every week and that he visits a therapist. Little does he know that the therapist, Sean, will change his life in so many ways.

3. Donnie Darko

“28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds”

A troubled teenager, Donnie Darko, escapes death when a jet engine crashes in his bedroom when he follows a giant bunny leading him outside. The bunny, called Frank, tells him that the world will end in twenty-eight days. As the final date comes closer and closer, Donnie is drawn into an alarming series of events that may or may not be a product of growing insanity.

4. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

“Why do nice people choose the wrong people to date?”

At the same time as suffering from a traumatic past, a young Charlie starts high school as a shy and awkward person but soon becomes friends with two other students who try their best to help him overcome his fears and troubles. All three of them go to extreme lengths to discover the true outcome of life, overcoming obstacles and discovering themselves, Charlie uncovers the truth about his past.

5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

“What a loss to spend that much time with someone, only to find out she’s a stranger.”

A man awakes disheveled; impulsively, he skips work, heading instead to the shore. On this chilly February day, a woman in orange, hair dyed blue, chats him up: she’s Clementine, he’s Joel, shy and sad; by day’s end, he likes her. The next night she takes him to the frozen Charles River. After he drops her off, she asks to sleep at his place, and she runs up to get her toothbrush. Strange things occur: their meeting was not entirely chance, they have a history neither remembers. Our seeing how the lacunae came to be and their discovery of the memory loss take the rest of the film.

6. When Harry met Sally

“You want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible”

Harry and Sally first meet as they finish college in Chicago and spend 18 hours together in a car headed to New York. They don’t quite hit off, particularly after Harry opines that a man and a woman can never be just friends because he’ll always want to have sex with her. Over the next 10 years, they occasionally meet and soon do in fact become fast friends. They share the intimate details of their lives – hopes, dreams, failures and successes – and in the process also fall in love. It’s not evident that they will be able to sustain their relationship once they get together however.
