Deadly Shooting at Nightclub in Colorado

At least 5 people were killed and 25 injured in a shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub, Club Q, in Colorado Springs on November 19th. The gunman was stopped by brave patrons at Club Q, one of which is an Army veteran. The club released a statement on social media thanking “the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

This tragedy occurred only minutes before 12:00 am on Transgender Day of Remembrance, which Club Q was planning on celebrating with a drag show. The nightclub has now been closed until further notice. Police are currently investigating whether or not this attack was a hate crime. Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez stated, “Club Q is a safe haven for our LGBTQ citizens, every citizen has a right to feel safe and secure in our city, to go about our beautiful city without fear of being harmed or treated poorly.”

This tragedy is reminiscent of the 2016 shooting at the LGBTQ+ nightclub Pulse in Orlando where 49 people were killed and 53 injured. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 600 mass shootings in the U.S. this year.
