Events in St. Johns County School District Cancelled/Modified While Covid Cases Rise

It is no secret that COVID-19 numbers are rising amongst students and staff in the St. Johns County School District. Cancellations of public events throughout the district are becoming more common. Superintendent of Schools, Tim Forson, called off St. Johns High School showcase. This showcase gives eighth graders an inside look at what the high school academies in St. Johns school district offer. The modification of this event was for each school to hold their own individual career night. “Forson said the district will look at upcoming events on a case-by-case basis to determine safety and risk factors,” says The St. Augustine Record. June 2021 was around the time where schools stopped implementing desk dividers, masks, and social distance policies. The 21-22 school year has so far continued with the no restriction policy. But the question is, do we implement masks and desk dividers again to stop cases from rising? “The highest concentration of positives and quarantines has been at schools in northern St. Johns County…” says Colleen Michele Jones from the St. Augustine Record. The safety of students and staff are at risk while these numbers keep climbing at the rate they are. Schools postpone and cancel social gatherings, will this be enough to keep our district healthy and out of harm’s way?
