Flesh-Eating Bacteria in Florida

Ft. Myers is one of the Florida counties that was hit hardest by Hurricane Ian, and it has experienced the destructive effects. One of which has been an increase of flesh-eating bacteria that has affected the entire state. As of Friday, October 14th, the Florida Department of Health has reported 65 cases of vibrio vulnificus infections and 11 deaths this year, compared to 35 cases and 10 deaths in 2021.

Health officials in Lee County have warned citizens that post-hurricane conditions can be dangerous, “Flood waters and standing waters following a hurricane pose many risks, including infectious diseases such as vibrio vulnificus.”

People with open wounds or scratches should avoid contact with warm brackish water or seawater, because they are more likely to contract an infection.
