Highs Barely in the 60’s – Has Florida Finally Reached Winter Weather?
Winter weather is often a topic of discussion among friends. From those who cannot bear the cold, to those who cockily pretend to not be affected by it. 2023 has, however, seen a different pattern in November and December’s temperatures. While many are pleased by the recent warm weather, others have become frustrated. Here is a quick look at the reasoning behind these patterns, and the upcoming weather.
December 2023’s weekend of Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd was shrouded in humid, rainy weather for northern Florida. On Saturday, tornadoes were even reported in Duval County. For both days, as well as Monday the 4th, the highs soared in the 80’s, with lows in the 50’s. Today, Tuesday the 5th, the high temperature is not even 70. Major news and meteorology sources are reporting a similar trend the rest of the week- until this coming Saturday.
But why is this? The world is currently in what is called an El Nino cycle, where warm water shifts closer to Americas, bringing rains and increased temperatures to many countries, largely Peru and Ecuador. These rains, in a normal La Nina cycle would impact Indonesia and Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, etc.) There is a pattern seen this year, these higher temperatures come with storms.
The coming Saturday is predicted to reach the high 70s, followed by a high of 70 on Sunday, and a rainstorm (Katie Garner, meteorologist for news4jax.)
Regardless of these temporary weather events, one thing is certain: given Nease is in northern Florida, she will not see a White Christmas, this year, or any coming years.
