New Pope for the Worldwide Catholic Church
The new Bishop of Rome and the head of the worldwide Catholic Church has been elected! Cardinal Robert Prevost has been selected to step up as the Catholic people’s pope. For those who don’t know, a new pope is selected by the Cardinals in a secret ballot. Balloting takes up to four rounds a day until one of the Cardinals receives a two-thirds vote to be the new pope. The public will know a new pope is chosen when there is white smoke coming out of the Sistine Chapel’s chimney. Robert Prevost is the first US-born pope in history to be elected and was elected Thursday, May 8, 2025. He will be known as Pope Francis’s successor and go by the name of Pope Leo XIV. For a little background on Leo, he is a 69-year-old from Chicago. He has built much of his life experience while living in South America as a missionary. Recently, he has led a strong Vatican office for bishop appointments. After Leo’s election, the world welcomed him with open arms and many world leaders look forward to working with him. The world wishes Pope Leo the best as he carries out his selective duty!
