President of Duval Teachers United Abruptly Retires
The longtime leader of Duval Teachers United, the union representing teachers and staff in Duval County schools, has retired. Teresa Brady, who officially retired last week, had served as the union’s president for more than 20 years.
In a statement last Tuesday, Brady confirmed her retirement after more than 40 years in public education “and a rewarding 30-plus-year career with Duval Teachers United.” The union’s Executive Board met Monday night to discuss and elect a new president. They also had to elect a new vice president with the retirement of Ruby George earlier this month. No reason has been given for the retirement and the union has not answered repeated requests for more information. But the union did release a statement Tuesday, saying that Brady did “a lot of great work for Duval County teachers, staff and students over the past 40 years. She has earned her retirement.”
The retirements also come as Florida places more restrictions on public sector employee unions. The law now prevents union dues from being deducted from workers’ paychecks, forcing its members to make separate payments. The law also requires unions to specify on membership forms that Florida is a “right-to-work” state and disclose the compensation of the five highest-paid officers and employees of each union.
