Proposed Ban on Cell Phones in Florida Schools
A new bill proposed by the House Education Administration Committee in Florida could cause a major change in student life. This bill, proposed in early March and planned to be implemented at the start of July, would ban the use of cell phones entirely on school property and during any school activities, even if these activities take place off-grounds.
The proposition has been contentious and a source of debate for administrators and parents alike. While supporters of the ban consider it a vital step towards eliminating distractions and cheating in the classroom, opponents point towards the usefulness of the internet and its resources. Additionally, parents want students to have a way to contact friends and family at all times in the case of emergency, a real concern in today’s political and social climate.
The bill would have exceptions for students who need their devices due to disability, medical reasons, or their status as English Language Learners. Even with these exceptions, parents are apprehensive to accept a ban on the pervasive and influential technology of cell phones.
