St. Johns County’s Growth Affecting the Classroom
According to the St. Augustine Record, the student population in the county raised by 4 percent in the past year, making the enrollment size more than 43,000 students. In the district’s most recent reaction to this increasing expansion, the school board passed a resolution to allow classes to surpass the current state limit.
Members of the school board say this resolution is in the best interest of students so that they gain a better education without having to worry about restraints on classroom sizes. The board as a whole concluded, “[I]t is impractical, educationally unsound, [and] disruptive to student learning to continually move and relocate students within a grade level to maintain class size compliance.”
Although some find this new resolution to be helpful for the students’ learning environment, others believe it will be distracting for so many kids to be packed into the classrooms.
Students in the school district should expect class size changes to be made within the next month or so, which includes high school core classes being allowed up to 5 more students per class.
