On December 29th, the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, peacefully passed away at 100 years of age. Carter led a great life, and has left a lasting impact on our country. Carter was a southern Democrat who served from 1977 to 1981. After his presidency, Carter created Carter Center, built a presidential library, taught at Emory University, and wrote numerous books involving political memoirs and poetry. The Carter Center is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization founded in 1982. Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter partnered with Emory University after his defeat in the 1980 United States presidential election. The Carter Center has helped to improve life for people in more than 80 countries by resolving conflicts, advancing democracy, and human rights; preventing diseases; and improving mental health care. In 2002, Jimmy Carter was awarded the Peace Prize for undertaking peace negotiations, campaigning for human rights, and working for social welfare. Carter is one of four presidents who have received a Nobel Peace Prize.
