Nease Electra-Thon Club
Nease’s Electra-thon Club is a team-led club where students of all engineering categories can come together and be able to build a battery powered go-kart. This club is more than it seems at first glance. It is where students can share and create innovative ideas for the kart that they build and race in a series of two, one-hour races. The students in this club recently had their first endurance race of the year at Florida State College at Jacksonville and had proved to be a challenge for all of them and the Kart that they had built, having been the only high school team at the event. The Kart itself had been powered by a brushless motor and driven on three wheels as regulated by the governing body (Electra-thon America). There were some advantages that the students at Nease had compared to other colleges and teams on track. One of the most major advantages was having moped tires instead of regular bicycle tires, this provided the upper hand when it came to having consistent lap times because of the longevity of the tire grip compared to thinner bicycle tires. The weather on the day of the endurance race also played a major effect on everybody there. The mixture of cloudiness, wind, and freezing air all played a part in creating a challenging environment for everyone where they can compete and have fun.
Nease had slower lap times during the race compared to other competitors but had the most consistent lap times and placed a very respectable fourth out of eight other college and higher resource individuals. This shows how it is possible to have a team that is fully self-funded and still not be dead last place with the power of only knowledge and a team that is able to collaborate with each other and be able to solve problems effectively.
