Global Population Reaches 8 Billion
As of early this week, the number of humans living on our planet Earth surpassed 8 billion, about 12 years after surpassing 7 billion and 48 years after reaching 4 billion. This momentous milestone for humanity indicates the positive changes that have occurred in recent years, such as increased life expectancy, decreased poverty, and advancements in medicine and health.
Although reaching 8 billion people hints at progress in the changes above, more people on the planet also means more problems to come. The recent COVID-19 pandemic illustrates such problems, along with the climate change crisis, international conflicts, and decreased quality of education.
China is still in the lead for the most populated nation, though statistics show that India will soon overtake the record, which leaves the United States around 3rd place. With the continuous increase in population, the U.S. gains more immigrants in need of jobs, housing, and education.
Overall, though there are many good aspects that come with more people living on this Earth, the benefits may not outweigh the costs soon.
