Hurricane Isaias Strengthens as It Heads to the Gulf Coast
By Charles Emilio
There is a growing hurricane in the Gulf named Isaias. Hurricane Isaias is still gaining strength and is headed for a Gulf Coast landfall Friday night with storm surge, rainfall flooding and high winds. It will then spread its heavy rain inland over the East this weekend. Isaias has sustained winds of 85 mph and is centered in the Gulf just under 400 miles south-southwest of New Orleans. The storm is moving to the east-northeast at 10 mph. It’s expected to strengthen to at least a Category 2 hurricane by Thursday night in the central Gulf as it begins to take a more northerly track.
The hurricane is growing quickly, benefiting from Gulf water temperatures well into the 80s and a moist air mass, both favorable for intensification over the next 18 hours or so. It has already undergone rapid intensification, going from maximum sustained winds of 40 mph at 5 a.m. on Wednesday to 80 mph at 5 a.m. on Thursday. Rapid intensification is an increase in sustained winds of 35 mph or more in 24 hours or less. Heavy rain from Isaias will arrive along the Gulf Coast Friday, then will push far inland through the rest of the weekend.
The Rainfall is also a major concern in certain parts of the Gulf Coast as much as 15 inches of rain could fall locally near the Gulf Coast, especially east of the track of the center where heavy rainbands may persist for the longest. Most other areas near the Gulf Coast are forecast to pick up between 3 and 7 inches. During a Hurricane, you should prepare for different conditions depending on where you are located. Residents should stay updated with state and county alerts in the coming days.
If you’re near the Gulf Coast in areas covered by hurricane warnings and/or storm surge warnings, the time is now to prepare before conditions begin deteriorating Friday. Know if you live in an evacuation zone and where you’d go if requested to do so by local officials. Be prepared for power outages that could last at least several hours or possibly multiple days. If you’re in the Southeast up to the Appalachians, Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic, watch for flash flooding this weekend. Avoid flood-prone areas and never drive into flooded stretches of roads.
