Is It Time to “Take A Break”?

In the past few years, social media has taken the world by storm. But when is social media too much? Some large platforms recognize the issues of spending increased time on social media. For example, Instagram has recently introduced a new feature to decrease extensive exposure to social media. Instagram representative, Adam Mosseri states, “The Take A Break feature encourages teens to stop scrolling if they have been on the social media platform for a while.” The feature also allows parents to see how much time their child is spending on social media daily. The introduction of this safety feature comes after the company received backlash on not doing enough to prevent extended social media use. Some are skeptical if periodic notifications will actually decrease media activity. Nease student Ashley Allen said, “I’m not convinced that this will stop people from using social media. If people want to use their phones, a notification won’t stop them.” Instagram plans to roll out the feature worldwide early next year.
