No More FSA?

Any student that has gone to school in Florida is familiar with the dread that anticipates the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) that occur at the end of every school year. Florida students have been required to take these standardized tests every year since 2003, but that may not be the case for much longer. On Tuesday, Sept. 14th Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that he would like to see the end of the FSA and replace it with progress monitoring, which is a more individualized assessment of students throughout the entirety of the year. In regards to the proposed change, the governor said, “This is going to be more student friendly. This is going to be more parent friendly. This is a big deal.”

The process to end the FSA could get complicated since it is a government-mandated exam. The St. Augustine Record wrote, “The governor said he will work with lawmakers to ‘craft legislation’ to end the use of the tests. If the Legislature agrees, the current school year will be the last for the FSA process.”
