Return to the Moon: Inside NASA’s Artemis Mission

By Harper Gardner

For the first time in 50 years humans are preparing to return to the moon. NASA is currently operating their Artemis Program, marking a new era of space exploration. With this program, NASA aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon and hopefully pave the way for additional Mars missions in the future. The Artemis missions are built on the Apollo Program, which is known for successfully landing astronauts on the moon. However, the Artemis is being focused on its sustainability, allowing astronauts to live and work on the lunar surface for longer durations of time, rather than short visits. One major component to support this effort is the Orion spacecraft. This component is designed to help carry astronauts safely beyond Earth’s orbit. With the support of NASA’s Space Launch System, the Orion spacecraft will transport crew members to lunar orbit, then to the Moon’s surface. From this program, scientists hope to gather more data and information of the Moon’s resources, involving water ice near its poles. Scientists hope that these spacecraft advancements and more intel on the moon will eventually allow for future Mars missions to be more achievable and fulfilling. As technology advances and more successes are shown, the Artemis Program marks the beginning of a new chapter in space exploration. The overall goal is beyond just visiting the Moon but building a foundation for the future of human space travel and preparing for what is in store.
