Shining the Spotlight on NEHS

The National English Honor Society (NEHS) is a club that has returned to Nease. The NEHS is an organization for those with an exceptional ability and interest in areas such as literary analysis, media studies, composition, linguistic study, and creative writing. NEHS is the only high school honor society that is exclusively for students of English. As such, it provides a unique opportunity to engage students, teachers, and local schools in the valuable experience of discipline-related national honor-society participation. The National English Honor Society’s main goals include intending to recognize those with past and current accomplishments, nurture members abilities, and encourage members to use their talents in service of others.

This year, two English teachers at Nease are sponsors of this club: Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Lopez. In regards to Mrs. Lewis, this is her seventh-year teaching English at Nease. Mrs. Lewis finds English class to be a valuable skill for all fields of study, mainly because of the critical thinking and communication skills involved. On the other hand, this is Mrs. Lopez’s second year teaching English at Nease. Mrs. Lopez expresses that, “English was my favorite subject in school and I’m happy to be teaching juniors again this year!”

Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Lopez stated that they “…felt it was time to have a national organization for those who are passionate about literature and want a chance to explore it with their peers. There needs to be a place for every student to shine, and this is just one more opportunity.” Overall, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Lopez declare that they are planning to “roll out the club activities over the next two years including scholarship opportunities, writing competitions, and friendly literary discussions.” Furthermore, they would like to eventually create a writing lab that is similar to those at most universities. By planning to do all this, these teachers are upholding the motto of “gelast sceal mid are,” which is Old English for “duty goes with honor.” This motto affirms and celebrates an obligation to use one’s gifts in service to others. Students are adhering to NEHS’ main mission by providing services to peers, school, and community. At the moment, NEHS is meeting in B102, Mrs. Lewis’ room. Additionally, induction is planned to be in the spring.

Payton Logan, a senior, holds the position of president in this club. She asserts, “I plan to lead NEHS with kindness and dedication. I intend to put a lot of effort into this club.” Furthermore, she envisions this club to be very welcoming and encouraging to all its members. Peyton Radcliff, also a senior, serves as the vice president. Radcliff adds, “I’d like to have an impactful service project; I want to do something that leaves an impact on our community and communities around us. I want to make a club that people want to participate in for years to come.” Overall, both Logan and Radcliff intend to get NEHS involved in the community and leave a lasting impact on Nease.
