St. Johns County and Its Lack of Bus Drivers

The Covid pandemic caused many drivers to not to return to work often due to fear of exposure, since they see so many students in a day. The shortage has caused busses to become overcrowded and often late getting to or returning from school. St. Johns County has a significantly large amount of kids that need school busses to transport them to and from school. This has affected a variety of elementary, middle, and high schools, including Nease. The shortage has caused the district to establish incentives to gain some new drivers. This includes offering one of the largest salaries to drivers in the state ($16 – $23 an hour). With these changes, the county is hoping to see some improvement in the amount of bus drivers along with efficiency of bus transportation.
