Controversy at Nease
Last week at Nease High School, our St. Johns County Public Schools administrators removed a pride flag from the sponsor of the Gay-Straight Alliance’s room. This removal of the flag resulted in a protest at our school against this event. Our district describes this demonstration as “passive” and “peaceful” in response to our school’s decision to remove the pride flag.
Our very own Nease High School Senior Blythe Gouker, helped with the coordination of this event last Thursday before school. “By taking the flag down, they inadvertently made a stance on their opinions on gay rights”, said Gouker. This demonstration stirred up controversy at the district level regarding what may be defined as a political expression.
