The Ban on TikTok Continues to Grow Stronger
The U.S. Senate passed legislation on Wednesday to ban the TikTok app on all government devices as a result of security concerns with the app. The House of Representatives has yet to decide whether or not to take up the bill, currently named the No TikTok on Government Devices Act, due to consultation with White House officials before doing so.
The governors of Georgia and New Hampshire, Brian Kemp and Chris Sununu (respectively), have already taken measures to bring the bill into effect in those states by banning the use of TikTok, as well as WeChat and other messaging/social media apps from Tencent (a Chinese technological firm), on any state government-owned computer devices. Governor Sununu enacted the statewide ban on TikTok on government devices for similar reasons as the Senate and claims that the ban “will help preserve the safety, security, and privacy of the citizens of New Hampshire.”
Though some exceptions will be made in Georgia and other states, this TikTok ban also applies to state universities and colleges who use the platform to grab the attention of current and possible students and athletes. As a result, recent or soon-to-be high school graduates across the nation might face more challenges finding and interacting with suitable colleges.
