A Better Future for Jacksonville: Donna Deegan is Elected as Jacksonville’s First Female Mayor

History was made on May 16th when Democrat Donna Deegan became the first female mayor of Jacksonville. After a tight race against Republican candidate Daniel Davis, Deegan boasted 52% of votes compared to Davis who only acquired 48%. This victory comes just after the runoff election in March, where neither candidate received 50% of the votes since only 25% of registered voters in Duval County showed at the polls. This number pales in comparison to the 38% of voter turnout for the May election. Though the stakes were high, tensions were not. Once the winner of the race was announced, according to Deegan, Davis immediately called her and offered his support and urged his supporters to rally behind her so they can build a better future for Jacksonville together.
