Upcoming School District Boundaries

The city council is under a federal court order to redraw its city and school board boundaries after a federal judge claimed the plan approved earlier this year was unconstitutional. In the past month, a federal judge agreed with groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) that the drawn maps were racially based. During Tuesday’s meeting, Northside Coalition, NAACP, and other citizens that filed a lawsuit presented their maps to the council. Instead of mainly packing Black neighborhoods into four council districts, their map puts some of those neighborhoods into other districts, which they said is a better representation of the city. Because of these changes, the school district boundaries will face significant changes in the upcoming school year. Though, as of right now, Jacksonville has until November 8th to finalize a new district map.
